Qwest Field in Seattle is getting a new name. A press-conference will be held Thursday announcing CenturyLink Field as the new name for the home of the Seattle Seahawks and Sounders FC. This name change will also affect the current Qwest Events Center. The building adjacent to the stadium will be known as CenturyLink Events Center.
Traditionally, the stadium has been known as Seahawks Stadium. The field was always known as Qwest Field at Seahawks Stadium. One can only assume that this will not change, and within the walls of the stadium, CenturyLink Field at Seahawks Stadium will come to light.
Over the years many fans have given nicknames to the field, mostly because they don’t like calling it out by a corporate sponsor. A Sounders supporter group twist on this is Royal Brougham Park. I rather like this. It has a nice ring to it, and Royal Brougham is not only a historic Seattle sports figure, but also the name of the street that boarders the stadium’s south end.
Hearing the new nicknames that come out of the woodworks should be fun in the coming weeks. “The Link”, “The Clink”, or some may revert to still calling it “Qwest Field”. Regardless of what comes up, I’d like to urge the northwest soccer fans to adopt Royal Brougham Park. Our stalwart supporter groups call the south end of the stands “The Brougham End”, plus the historic man himself deserves the compliment.
CenturyLink Field is quite the mouth full. Feel free to share your nickname ideas in the comments section below.
