Which team should we expect to show up as the regular season segues into the playoffs?

On Wednesday, the Sounders ran roughshod over the Chicago Fire in the US Open Cup semifinal, scoring 6 goals in a blowout victory.

Sometimes you step away from your desk for lunch and return to find Twitter abuzz with news that one of your favorite players is in London finalizing a deal to move overseas.

You know when you wake up with a scratch in your throat, and your first thought is, “Crap, I hope I’m not getting sick”?

Some games teach you something. They give you an idea of a team’s quality, what they’re capable of, which direction they’re heading. Some games are 3-0 drubbings that are best forgotten with a stiff drink.

It’s a weekend of meaningless international friendlies in MLS, and the Sounders are off until a big “Monday Night Football” showdown with the LA Galaxy, so it seems like a good time for a midseason progress report.

The first, a 1-0 defeat to the Vancouver Whitecaps, will soon be forgotten – a bump in the road in an otherwise excellent first half of the season.

After watching the league-leading Sounders dismantle previously undefeated Real Salt Lake, in a 4-0 rout, it might be tempting to hit the caps-lock key and make exclamations like this:

In addition to any Canadian candy bars the team may have purchased on its trip north (Coffee Crisp is my personal favorite), the Sounders should also have declared themselves fortunate when talking to border guards on the trip home following their 2-2 draw with the Whitecaps at BC Place.
