2012 has been a memorable year in the world of football, especially in Major League Soccer. During these last five days of the year we will be counting down the top five games of the year. Today we start with number 5, a true David beats Goliath.
#5 – Portland Timbers 0-1 Cal FC – May 30
After upsetting USL Pro side Wilmington Hammerheads, amateur side Cal FC drew Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers in the 3rd round of the 2012 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Just making the tournament and advancing this far could have been seeen as a huge accomplishment for Cal FC but they had other ideas.
Cal FC, coached by former US international Eric Wynalda, went into Jeld-Wen Field against the Timbers and withstood wave after wave of attacks from Portland. The home side outshot the amateur club 37-8 including a missed penalty from Kris Boyd but the game went to extra time. In the 95th minute Artur Aghasyan scored the game's lone goal, chipping Timbers keeper Troy Perkins beautifully, sending Cinderella to a shocking upset.
