In a move that has surprised a lot of MLS fans, the Houston Dynamo have hired Owen Coyle today as their new head coach. Coyle replaces Dominic Kinnear who left in October to take the head job in San Jose.
The Scottish born Coyle began his managerial career in Scotland with Falkirk and St. Johnstone. In 2007 Coyle took over English Championship side Burnley and led them to promotion to the English Premier League in his first season in charge.
Coyle moved to Bolton Wanderers in 2010 where he got his first taste of Houston. Doyle’s Bolton side beat the Dynamo 2-0 in July of 2011 in Houston’s annual Charities Cup. Coyle last coached Wigan Athletic in 2013.
With newly appointed general manager Matt Jordan in the fold Coyle can concentrate with just the on field happenings while Jordan can navigate the “quirky” MLS roster rules.
A lot will be expected of a manager who spent time in England’s top leagues. As just the second coach in franchise history, Coyle has big footsteps to follow in. One thing is for sure, Houston will be an interesting storyline to follow in the 2015 season.
