At the midpoint of the 2011 MLS season the Philadelphia Union sit atop the Eastern Conference with a record of 7-4-6. They have already recorded more clean-sheets than they did in the entire 2010 season and have earned more road points than last season. PPL Park has been a fortress, as the Union has yet to be defeated there in 2011. With that said, there is still plenty of room for improvement. Philadelphia’s offense has gone from nonexistent at the early stages of the season to inconsistent as of late. If the Union’s attackers can begin to string together some quality performances they can easy the pressure that their defense has had to deal with all season. Philly’s back 4 have been rock solid and is the one area that has seen the same players on the pitch week in week out. For much of the first half of the season, the Union’s midfield has been a merry-go-round. Most of the players that have featured in the Union’s midfield have played well and contributed to the team’s success.
Now it’s time for my midseason awards.
Rookie of the Year: Gabe and Michael Farfan
These 2 have made the most of their opportunities each scoring 1 goal and have proved versatile. .
Offensive Player of the Year: Danny Mwanga
In his 2nd season, Danny is tied for the team lead in goals with 5. He has done so without featuring in every match and often coming off the bench.
Defensive Player of the Year: Carlos Valdes
His presence in the back has solidified the defense. His knowledge and game awareness has been key to the Union’s strong defensive showing during the first half of the season.
Most Improved Player: Sheanon Williams
He was picked up in August 2010 by the Union and now their everyday right back. His long throw ins has provided the Union with many scoring opportunities and his defensive skills have shut down many of the league’s top players.
Most Valuable Player: Faryd Mondragon
The 40 year old keeper leads from the back. His vast experience has proved to be key to Philadelphia’s success as he acts as a general on the pitch.
