FANTASY MLS FOR XI: DOUBLE TIME

Happy Wednesday, MLS Fantasy fans! Today’s article is a bit earlier than normal, but that’s for a very important reason:

THE TRANSFER WINDOW ENDS TODAY AT 10PM EASTERN!

(I would have used the HTML “blink” tag if it still existed.)

Now that I have your attention, let’s get to work, since we don’t have much time. One special note: Columbus Crew SC is traveling to BC Place to take on the Vancouver Whitecaps tonight, and both teams will have a second match later in the weekend. This is important, because for both teams, the players’ scores will count FROM BOTH MATCHES. Bonus points!

And now, on to the questions:

@big_tx_morales being real: any DGW players worth using a transfer? #AskTravis #MLSFantasy

Michael is up-to-date with the MLS Fantasy lingo: “DGW” is short for “double game week” — in this case, the Vancouver and Columbus players that have two matches in this round. To answer the question: most definitely YES! Solid picks from Vancouver include Ousted, Beitashour, Waston, Morales, and Rivero. I’m less-sold on Columbus, because they have to play away from home in both matches, they won’t have Higuain for the first match (one of the only guys I would have picked), AND travel coast-to-coast (Vancouver to New England) and play two matches in the matter of four days. Grana, Pogatetz, Finlay, Meram, and MAYBE Kamara are worth a shot, but I’m not going to hold my breath; I would rate ALL of the Vancouver players I mentioned ahead of them.

@jeffryrnelson what happened with Jose Villarreal blanking? Didn’t see international or injury issue

Bruce Arena mentioned that Villarreal was excluded as a precautionary measure, and he didn’t want to play him on turf. I expect him to be back in the XI this week.

@hueybosco You think Crew is going to hurt this week?

Yes, and for all of the reasons I mentioned above. They could surprise me, but the odds are stacked against them.

@luis_cristovao How far would you go in using off-the-limit substitutions?

Personally, I’m not going to take more than a -8 point hit in a round unless there is a VERY good reason. You’re giving up guaranteed points for a shot at a better outcome. It’s better to plan ahead as much as possible and leave yourself some wiggle-room on your bench.

@DanLoney36 Is “Laniakea SC” as good a name as I think it is? Or do I have to explain that “SC” means supercluster?

I honestly didn’t know about the Laniakea Supercluster, but I’m definitely interested now, since I like to explore space in Elite: Dangerous when I’m not working or doing this!

@RubioSoccer35 how’s that look? (Seitz; Waston, Schuler, Toia, Grana; Pontius, Neagle, Kaka, Castillo; Rivero, Kamara)

Four DGW players is pretty solid, plus I like FC Dallas at home against Colorado. If you have a free transfer left, you might consider swapping out one of your midfielders not named “Castillo” for Pedro Morales to get one more DGW player in there.

Best of luck — mark my words: double-game weeks are ALWAYS crazy!
