Alright, first I’ll admit I’ve been lazy. I failed to come out with a preview for the Crew match, but in my defense I was working a lot this week. It didn’t take away from the fantastic form United has been in at RFK Stadium this year. In arguably the worst stadium situation in Major League Soccer, DC has put together an 8-1-2 record in the aging stadium. Despite every problem with RFK, it is currently one of the most dangerous places in MLS.
On Saturday night, DC came back out against a Columbus Crew squad which beat the Black and Red on July 21st at Crew Stadium. It was all even at halftime with neither side finding the back of the net. I was mainly unable to watch the match due to working behind the scenes, but I thought United was doing well and creating chances. It just didn’t fall for them in the first half.
The second half started out much better. Nick DeLeon continued his stellar rookie season by setting up United’s goal in the 49th minute. DeLeon outpaced the Crew defense, used his body to shield the ball, and made a low cross into the box which Pontius blasted into the back of the net for his 10th goal of the season. It was a great series of play for the Black and Red and was even sweeter when the full-time whistle was blown. The final score was 1-0 in favor of the good guys, and Pontius was the hero once again.
United’s play at home this season could be an important factor. We are now in the crunch time of the MLS season where points really start to matter. This isn’t like April or May where a bad streak can be recovered. Now, a bad streak could be the difference between playoffs and going home. In the month of August, DC has four home games total (including the Crew match). If United can keep the home play up, and grab a few points on the road, they will be in good position going into September. This month is probably one of the most important for United this season.
I won’t lie, I’m a bit nervous about the next match though. It’s an away match in Kansas City, but Sporting KC has been a force this season, and they’re the only team to hand United a loss at home. The match will be challenging, and later this week I’ll give you my expectations. Until then, Vamos United!
**I would like to send my condolences to the Columbus Crew and the family and friends of Kirk Urso. I cannot imagine how they must be feeling right now. I will be keeping them in my thoughts and prayers.
