Monarcas Morelia professional football club is based in Morelia that plays in Liga MX. The club was founded in 1924 under the name “Oro Morelia.” In 1996 the club was bought by the broadcast company TV Azteca and would later begin playing under the moniker “Monarcas.” The team won its first division tournament in the winter of 2000, after 70 years of playing Mexican professional soccer.

Morelia plays their home games in Stadium Jose Maria Morelos and Pavón. The stadium’s construction was completed in 1989. The official capacity of Stadium Jose Maria Morelos and Pavón is 45,000. As a fun fact, on the stadiums inaugural game in 1989 between Atlético Morelia and Club América it is estimated that more than 50,000 were in attendance.

Monarcas Morelia is the 2010 Super Liga champion. They defeated the MLS side New England Revolution 2-1 in the finals. On November 5th, 2013 Morelia won their first Copa MX in a 3-3 match that they would eventually win on penalties.

This match should be a great one and should provide some great competition for the Indy Eleven. It’ll be important for the Eleven to face some quality competition before getting back to league play. This will provide a great opportunity for Indy to face some top notch talent as they prepare to improve their record in the Fall Season.
