Colorado last met San Jose in the fall of 2010, knocking the Earthquakes from the playoffs. This past Saturday night, the Rapids beat the Earthquakes 2-1, leaving San Jose more sore and adding to the Earthquakes’ streak of 11 consecutive winless matches.
In the last two matches, San Jose has shown 90 plus minutes of passion and drive that hasn’t been seen the entire season. Knowing that their chances to reach the playoffs are diminishing, the Earthquakes have also modified their previous style of play from lob the ball to the “big target forward” to an entertaining pressing, attacking style of play, where everyone is part of the attack. Fans only wish that they had played in this style all season.But let’s face it, as long as the playoff format is in place with no monetary incentives to finish at the top of the table, fans will have to wait for the season’s homestretch to see players perform at their absolute best.
In the early first half, San Jose looked sharp. Midfilder Joey Gjertsen scored after a Chris Wondolowski attempted shot on goal was deflected by the Colorado goalkeeper. Following the goal, the Quakes continued to press and control possession but couldn’t score again. Referee Paul Ward granted the Rapids a PK on a questionable handball call in the penalty area. The chant “Ref You Suck” echoed throughout the match and intensified in the 50th minute as Sam Cronin received a red card for a tackle. With a man down, the Earthquakes keep the fight but it wasn’t enough.
Chris Wondolowski had one of his worst matches while Bobby Convey played as if it was his last game, floating all over the field and attempting to create chances.
DP Signing?
With the MLS international transfer window coming to a close, San Jose fans have lost hope on a DP signing. But according to a post match tweet from MLSoccer.com writer Geoff Lepper (@sjquakes), “Yallop said @SJEarthquakes are bringing in an attacking international before deadline. No confirmation from Doyle, who declined interviews.”
Who is this DP? Can he quickly gel with the rest of the team? Can he make an impact to end this winless slump? The Earthquakes face their number one rival, the LA Galaxy next Saturday at the Home Depot Center. We can expect the same intensity from the Earthquakes and hopefully they can finish their chances. San Jose’s march to the playoffs is becoming even harder, but at least the fans are finally seeing entertaining soccer.
