Chivas USA are currently rock bottom of the Western Conference, and with 12 points separating them from 8th placed San Jose Earthquakes, it is likely that is where they will finish the season. It has got to that stage of the season where the phrase “playing for pride” is used and lot and like it or not, that is exactly what the Goats are doing. The only other positive you can create from this miserable situation is the fact that although classed as the “worst team in the league”, Chivas might be last in the West but they are certainly not in the mess that Toronto or DC United are.
It is a sad state of affairs when you have to look to the frustration and misery of other teams to make yourself feel better but what else can you do as a Chivas USA fan? As the season winds down without any chance of making the playoffs fans need to find some positives to keep them warm over the winter break. Currently that means claiming “at least we are not as bad as Toronto or DC United” and quite rightfully looking at our decent run of results at home.
On September 9th those two positives came together. Chivas USA beat DC United 1-0 at home, saved fans from defeat to the lowest team in the league and it turn gave them another rare 3 points to shout about. Erick “Cubo” Torres found the net again and Chivas USA repaid the fans that made the journey out to cheer on a team destined for another disappointing year.
A week later, the higher placed Portland Timbers came to Los Angeles and Chivas USA were again a source of frustration for a travelling team desperate for 3 points. After taking the lead through Brian de la Fuente, the Timbers pulled one back to resign both teams to a point a piece.
