The Whitecaps announced Thursday that Danish goalkeeper David Ousted would be their newest signing. He previously played for Danish club Randers FC before the Caps officially announced the new deal. Even though Ousted is a keeper coming over from Europe, he will not be handed the starting job straight off the bat. Ousted will have to work for it, and it is likely that Brad Knighton will continue to start in goal for the next few matches at minimum.
What does this new signing mean for Joe Cannon though? It looks as though his season, and possibly his career are coming to their end. Surely with the recent signing of David Ousted and Brad Knighton in good form, he will not be seeing field time in MLS play this season.
There has also been rumours circling about a possible player signing from Europe. Martin Rennie has hinted at bringing in a new player but that is all the information he has given. If the Caps do indeed look into bringing in a new player, a defender or centre midfielder might be the most useful players to bring in. Vancouver could certainly put some use into an extra defender as they have been rather depleted in that area over the past weeks.
On the topic of new players coming into the squad, there are one or two players in the squad who should be on their way out as well. One of these players is Greg Klazura. Klazura has been nothing but a liability in the two games he has played in and has already costed the Caps points on the road due to his inexperience. So far he has scored an own-goal, failed to stay on his mark which resulted in a goal and has given up a penalty, all in only 85 minutes played.
Another who should be on his way out (one way or another) is Joe Cannon. The 38 year old goalkeeper has been sidelined for weeks now due to a persistent groin injury. With the new Ousted signing, it is unlikely he will see field action and that means that all he is doing at the moment is taking up salary cap space.
The Alain Rochat trade to DC United seems to already be paying off for the Whitecaps. Jordan Harvey, who filled in the vacant left back spot, has been lighting it up in his last few matches. He has scored 3 goals in 4 games and is already at 3 on the 2013 season, impressive numbers for a defender. It should also be said that Harvey has only taken part in 6 matches since the beginning of the season. Jordan Harvey is a very skilled player and is capable of also playing in a outside midfield position as well. His style of play and ability matches up nicely with his counterpart YP Lee who plays on the opposite side of the backline.
It is great to see Martin Rennie and the Whitecaps' front office making moves and looking to improve the squad. As long as they are careful and completely confident with what they are doing, there will be no problems. Despite the fact that the Caps have been in tremendous form of late, there are still tweaks here and there that need to be made.
