Enter the Burrito: RSL Welcomes New Designated Player Juan Manuel Martinez

Juan Manuel “Burrito” Martinez arrived in Salt Lake City this morning, welcomed by a crowd of Real Salt Lake fans anxious for the culmination of what had come to be known as “#BurritoWatch” on Twitter.  The Argentine striker is unlikely to make his debut Saturday against the Seattle Sounders, but could be available for RSL’s […]

At 35, Javier Morales Continues to Defy Expectations

The game clock ticked into the 38th minute of Real Salt Lake’s May 11, 2011 match against Chivas USA. RSL pressed up the left wing, and Javier Morales received the ball along the sideline. With a quick cut, Morales beat his mark, Marcos Mondaini, and dribbled to the top of the 18-yard box. Moments later, Mondaini was shown a […]

A Dash of Chaos: MLS Introduces “Targeted Allocation” Roster Rule

Major League Soccer has carried on for the last eight years under varying forms of the Designated Player Rule, a system that allows teams to sign a player above the league’s maximum single player budget charge and, frequently, above the team’s salary cap. The aim of the Designated Player Rule is clear: to allow MLS […]

Real Salt Lake and Colorado Rapids Draw in Rocky Mountain Cup Opener

Fresh off frustrating road losses to LA Galaxy and Vancouver Whitecaps, Real Salt Lake was forced to settle for a scoreless draw with the Colorado Rapids in a nationally televised home match on Sunday afternoon. Even though the two sides logged a number of chances (the teams combined for 31 shots), and RSL frequently looked […]

Allen’s First MLS Goal Pushes RSL Past Toronto

Real Salt Lake picked up its first win of the season Sunday afternoon, defeating Toronto FC at a sold-out Rio Tinto Stadium.  Jordan Allen’s first career goal in MLS proved to be the winner at the death, although the result came with some refereeing controversy in the home side’s favor.  Both squads were decimated by […]

Reloading Once More, Real Salt Lake Readies for 2015

The countdown clock to the 2015 MLS regular season is officially under a week, even if unofficially (with a possible strike in the offing) we could realistically still be a bit further out from the season’s kickoff.  But that won’t stop us here at Total MLS from taking a look at the upcoming season.  In […]

2014 Real Salt Lake Season Review

The 2014 season has officially come and gone. Not that it went quickly; Real Salt Lake kicked off its tenth regular season clear back on March 8, not to mention the preseason activities in Casa Grande, Irvine, Carson, and Tucson that stretched all the way back to January. Which is also one of the things I […]

RSL Defeats Chivas 2-0, Ushers Expansion Brother Closer to Oblivion

Sitting one point out of the third spot in the West, Real Salt Lake came into its season finale against Chivas USA on Wednesday with a sense of urgency.  Having fallen twice to the lowly Goats twice on the season, RSL needed to secure maximum points before heading into the MLS postseason in the hopes of […]

RSL Floods the Rapids in 5-1 Thrashing

After conceding first on Friday night, Real Salt Lake opened the flood gates, scoring four times before halftime and notching a fifth goal in the second stanza to defeat the Colorado Rapids 5-1.  Jose Mari’s 21st minute opener was overwhelmed by goals from Joao Plata, Javier Morales, Chris Schuler, and Carlos Salcedo along with an […]

Grieving for A.J. DeLaGarza as a Member of the MLS Family

As I drove home from my office in downtown Salt Lake City tonight, I was thinking about A.J. DeLaGarza.  My heart hurt for him.  A.J.’s son Luca passed away on Thursday due to complications related to hypoplastic left heart syndrome, just a week after Luca’s birth.

Looking at the Supporters’ Shield Race

Sunday night, after D.C. United finished kicking the Colorado Rapids all over RFK Stadium, I decided to pause and take a look at the Supporters’ Shield race as it currently stands. Needless to say, it’s about as close as you can ask for, with six teams within striking distance of MLS’s regular season crown. I […]

REPORT: RSL Set to Acquire Argentine Forward Sebastian Jaime

If reports out of Chile are accurate, Real Salt Lake has addressed a key concern today by acquiring Argentine forward Sebastian Jaime from Chilean side Union Espanola.  The attacker will seek to fill the gap left by the injured Alvaro Saborio, who will likely be out until September at the earliest.
